Mead's Auction Service has over 60 years of experience conducting auctions and providing certified appraisals. We're members of the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce and a licensed FFL dealer.
Established in 1960, our family business was started by William J. Mead, known by most as Willie. He began selling livestock and farm equipment during auctions. By the early 70s, dairy farms were dwindling and Willie moved onto estates, businesses, real estate, equipment, antiques, furniture, etc.
Along with his wife, Irma, who handled clerking and bookwork, Willie had many successful auctions over the years. In 1969, he built an auction building with the help of his three sons, Bill, Dave, and Steve, along with Willie’s dad, Wilford Mead. Wilford was 66 at the time, working with one arm having lost it in the Westfield Tannery.
In 1976, Willie's son, Steve, earned an associate degree in building construction from WACC now Penn College. He received an auctioneer license in 1979, worked at SSMH as a carpenter, and left in 1991 to take over the auction business.
Steve was 8 years old when he first started working at auctions with his father and brothers. He now runs Mead's Auction Service and is joined by several members of his family - wife, Sandy (advertising and bookwork), son, Tyler (auctioneering), daughter, Val (cashiering) along with daughter-in-law Emma, and son-in-law, Seth working the floor along with the rest of the family.
